You are authentic. Your food is authentic. To emphasize that element and fully convey your commitment, your plating should be as authentic as you and your vision.
The artists at Earthborn guarantee your tableware statement will shout ‘authenticity’.
Earthborn pottery is intrinsically interesting. From inception to completion, Earthborn stands alone in the crowd of copies, fakes, and knockoffs. Each piece is an individual, unique creation, but still conforms to meet the rigorous demands of the culinary professional- such as portion control, stackability, and of course, durability.
Earthborn has been tested and proven in the restaurant industry since 1997. Chefs world-wide have come to depend on not just the timeless beauty, but also the fundamental durability of this high-fired, vitrified stoneware.
Imagined and created by Tena Payne, Earthborn has evolved through the years with constant collaboration with those who know food best–people like you. Even though plates are made by hand, Tena has developed processes to speed production and oversee quality control, guaranteeing conformity to the commercial performance necessary in today’s demanding dining environment.
It Was the Mushrooms
Tena and her husband Wynn, love all things natural. So when introduced to the cultivation of shiitake mushrooms, they were ‘all in’. Their first harvest was so bountiful, Tena sought a solution to the problem of having pounds and pounds of mushrooms at her fingertips. The ‘Farm to Table’ movement was in its infancy, but Tena was unaware of the growing trend. When she took her harvest to restaurants in her area, the response was immediate and profound, and she realized the potential of the hospitality industry.
Being a self-taught potter, Tena always dreamed of making a living with her art. And this was the moment of her epiphany. Restaurants were the key to make and sell pots to make a living.
During one delivery, she noticed broken pottery on the floor. Sensing the greater opportunity, she shared her skillset with the chef. They collaborated and decided on a course of action.
She would bring a sampling of her work to test its appropriateness in this environment.
That was Chef Chris Hastings of Hot and Hot Fish Club in Birmingham AL, in 1997. He was new to the area and had just launched his flagship concept.
For the next six years, Tena and Chris tweaked the designs. Eventually Tena realized that Chris was happy with her results, and she knew she had a product she could sell to other chefs.

Today Earthborn is humming. Servicing accounts around the globe, it has grown to an amazing level of achievement. This Woman-Owned and family-driven business sustains 17 employees and their families.
Authenticity is key. Be authentic. Choose Earthborn.
